Francis Pharcellus Church for The Sun
Tuesday, September 21, 1897
In 1897, on the advice of her father, eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a short letter to the editor of New York's now-defunct newspaper, The Sun, in which she sought confirmation of Santa Claus' existence. In response, Francis Pharcellus Church published an editorial, entitled "Is There a Santa Claus," which went on to become, and is still, the most reprinted English language editorial in history, reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps. It has become a part of Christmas culture over 110 years later.
